Introduction:
To test household solutions using three different types of indicator paper to determine whether each solution is acidic, neutral or basic. In the beginning of the class we had to predict what we thought the following household solutions would be as far as acidic, neutral or basic.

Wide Range pH Indicator Paper
Test Substances
Red and Blue Litmus Paper
Goggles
Small Beakers or cups.
Substances:
Vinegar

Lemon Juice
Soda(Diet Coke)

Baking Soda Solution
Drain Cleaner.
Procedure:
We had to place a small amount of the solution in the beaker/ cup. The cups were labels the of the solutions above, my partner and I carefully dipped the a strip of pH Wide Range paper into the substance and compared the color of paper to the color chart on the container . After that was completed we had to record the pH value and determine whether it was an acid, base, or neutral. For the red and blue litmus paper we had to carefully dip a strip into the substance and record the color results and determine if it’s a acid, base, or neutral. As far as the Paper Dryed with Red Cabbage juice goes it was into the substance and allow the strip to dry. At the end of the process we had to tape the strip to scale below to create a color chart for Red Cabbage dye.

Conclusion:
Throughout this whole process I have gained more knowledge of how to determine pH and how pH is used to determine whether a substance is acid, base or neutral. We test many household solutions using three types of indicators to determine whether each solution is either acidic, basic, or neutral.

ReplyDeleteI was struck to read the description of the procedure. It is easy to follow and details the steps that you did to complete the lab. I think it would have been helpful to have a brief mention of the range of pH paper colors or values to help the audience understand the results. Same with the litmus test. A brief mention of what 'red-red', 'blue-blue', and 'red-blue' each mean. Usually the introduction is the place for this, along with the purpose and prediction/hypothesis that you included. Next time, try to include a bit more information in the introduction to help the reader through the lab.
